One Letter At A Time - Spread The Word - Entertainment Weekly

Last week was the day to Spread The Word To End The Word.  People have been taking pledges online, sharing personal stories and trying to help the world understand why the R-word is so harmful.

Another way to help spread the change is to write a letter or an email when you see something that is negative or positive. Provide feedback!  Let advertisers, corporations and stores know when you like or dislike something.

After the multiple page spread in Entertainment Weekly that featured actors who have Down syndrome, I wrote a letter to the editor.  This is what we need to do. One letter at a time. One email at a time.  We can make the change we wish to see in the world.  Thank you, Stefanie C. for telling about the letter making it in the March 16 issue!

In the meantime, we are compiling "The List" of movies, books, shows and songs that use the R-word.  Did you know there is a short film (11 minutes long) out there directed by Etan Cohen that is called "My Wife is Retarded"?  Interesting.  Not thinking that I will be seeing any of his future work.

  2. I never liked the word nor used it, but since my son was born with DS, I really despise the word. The old adage "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me" is so not true.

Congrats on getting the letter posted!
